While calling for an increased gasoline tax on CNBC this morning Mike Jackson, AutoNation Chairmen and CEO, noted that fuel efficiency is now more important than cupholders when making vehicle purchasing decisions.
When Americans make fuel efficiency more important than where they put their morning cup of Joe, you know the world is changing!
Is an increased gasoline tax a good way to get Americans to realize the importance of fuel efficiency?

I think a gas tax would be great. Just reduce taxes somewhere else so politicians can claim that they aren't raising taxes. Also, Ford just announced that SUV sales in August were down 60% from last year. Yes, you read that correctly 60%. If that trend continues then the Excursion won't be the only SUV canceled by Ford.
Yet, by 2010, J.D. Power and Associates predicts the total number of SUVs available will increase by 27 percent.
Granted, many of these will be crossovers and smaller SUVs, maybe even a few will be hybrids, but still, 27 percent.
The suggested increased gas tax would be 10 cents every year for 10 years. I wonder if that would have any effect, especially if gas prices drop?
I wonder if a gas tax is the best way to make Americans aware of the importance of fuel efficiency?
